Peñalba de San Esteban, is to be found at the very Eastern end of the DO Ribera del Duero, at over 900 metres above sea level. The climate is tough. Our average annual rainfall is less than 400mm. The sudden autumns soon turn to very cold winters, frost is a common visitor in spring time, but summer is hot with the occasional violent thunderstorm.

Total vines 14 Ha
Valley extending between the towns of Atauta y Peñalba de San Esteban, and sede del Rudeles. The vines are mostly to be found in the valley which links the two villages of Peñalba and Atauta.

95% Tempranillo old vines and 5% Garnacha old vines

Vinification
Manual picking from 25 of September, and strict selection of the grapes both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Fermentation was temperature controlled at 27°,23 days of maceration. The grapes are destemed and the berries pressed for the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, under controlled temperature, with regular remontages 2 or 3 times a week. The fermentation period was 6 days and 24 more days for maceration. Malolactic fermentation took place in oak.
Ageing
13 months in French oak (2nd year), medium grain and medium toasted, more 14 months in bottle before being released on the market.
Tasting notes
Visual: intense red cherry colour and garnet tinges.
Nose: Big richness with a lot of different matured fruits flavours, toasted oak and a touch of minerality.
Palate: The attack on the palate is firm and rich, fruits and oak well integrated, chocolate, pepper, liquorice and a well balanced acidity.
